The Locavores Dilemma

I have a goal of buying local,  but I’m just realizing how difficult it can be. My first batch of strawberry jam was from Billy’s, in Okanogan, and google let me know this morning that its 225 miles away. Hardly local, but it feels local — same state, I’ve been there and like it, and it’s certainly in the radius of recreational activities.

Tiny’s, another large organic producer, is in Wenatchee, which is about 150 miles away (on the road to Okanogan). Again, it feels local. Perhaps this is a function of living in the West. A fifty mile radius might be big in Vermont, but out here that’s a reasonable commute.
